Depressing Movie - The divide of beauty and ugliness

Actually written MARCH 13, 2012 -

Turning a cold eye to beauty is as easy as quelling physical desire or responding with indifference to a baby’s cry. We can say that beauty is dead, but all that does is widen the chasm between the real world and our understanding of it.

(Nancy Etcoff, Survival of the Prettiest, P4)

3 characters:

One elderly woman: Eldrecia

One handsome young man: Chad

One pretty young woman: Danni

All words are voice-over, indicating they are the thoughts of the characters, or that the characters are abstractions who communicate telepathically..

Chad and Eldricia sit in fold-up chairs facing one another at a distance of about 6 feet.

Eldricia: He and I are one. One spirit under the illusion of separateness.

Chad: She and I are one. One spirit under the illusion of separateness.

Now Danni appears in a chair sitting next to Eldricia.

Chad now focuses on Danni.

Chad: She and I are one. One spirit under the illusion of separateness.

Now the three of them are sitting closer to one another, hands joined.

Chad: I want to make love to one of them.

Danni: I want to make love to one of them.

Eldricia: I want to make love to both of them.

All three: The desire to make love is rooted in the illusion of separateness. It is the yearning for a substitute union with the illusion of the separate other.

Chad: It is a strong illusion. It is a strong desire.
I can’t live without making love.

Danni: I can’t live without making love.

Eldricia: In present company, I must go without making love.

Chad drops Eldricia’s hand and gives a longing look to Danni.

Danni smiles seductively back at Chad and drops Eldricia’s other hand.

Chad and Danni continue to stare lustfully at one another.

Chad: I am horny.

Danni: I am horny.

Eldrecia: I am alone.
I am lonely.

Chad and Danni sober up and look sullen again. They look at Eldrecia and take her hands again.

All three murmur: We are one. We are one. We are one. We are one.

Danni drops Chad’s hand and looks compassionately at Eldrecia, and uses her now freed hand to caress Eldrecia’s cheek.

Danni to Eldrecia: What do you feel when reality is so cruel that it makes me averse to your body?

Chad now looks compassionately at Eldrecia too, and caresses her other cheek with his recently freed hand.

Chad to Eldrecia: We are one. We are one. But I can’t help my feelings. I can’t help but reject you as a lover.

Chad and Danni begin to caress Eldricia in other places, slowly.

Chad and Danni to Eldricia: Pity makes me want to hold you. Pity drives me to caress you against my revulsion.

Eldricia’s eyes tear up.

Eldrecia to Chad and Danni: No. No, my sad lovers. I don’t want your pity. I want to be wanted.

Chad and Danni regretfully retract their caressing hands and return to just the three of them holding hands.

All three of them slowly begin to rock back and forth in their chairs with agitated sorrow on their faces, their eyes tearing up.

All three murmur again: We are one. We are one. We are one. …

The end. Instant black silence. Credits roll.
